Seawall repair on the Wabasso mainland

Mainland Wabasso projects can involve more than the water-facing structure. Establish the wall’s condition, the approach from the road and the upland area needed for machinery before choosing a repair method or accepting a price.

Get to know your waterfront

Wabasso is distinct from Wabasso Beach across the lagoon. The county lists separate 2000 and 2017 Wabasso Corridor Plans, and the corridor includes lagoon areas, scrub and freshwater wetlands. A mainland address does not establish a uniformly cleared construction site or unrestricted route to the waterfront.

Include upland access in the seawall assessment

The historical corridor plan records an approximately 111-acre Wabasso Scrub acquisition near CR 510 and 58th Avenue. The state birding-trail account describes scrub, flatwoods, seasonal wetlands, scrub-jays and gopher tortoises there. Nearby habitat is a reason to investigate the actual access footprint, not a declaration that every residential lot has the same conditions. Wabasso Causeway Park, at 3105 Wabasso Bridge Road, is the lagoon-crossing park. Its recreational access is different from Atlantic-side Wabasso Beach Park and does not establish a right to use county land for construction. Wabasso Causeway Park

Have the assessor explain where materials would be unloaded, where excavation would occur and whether a dock blocks part of the wall. If a proposal depends on marine access, ask for that assumption in writing before comparing it with a land-based quote.

What could the work cost?

Request separate line items for the wall, required design, access arrangements and restoration. The county’s published schedule lists a $200 Deck, Dock or Seawall application fee effective October 11, 2021; verify the current total because that application charge is not the whole permit or project cost.

Published planning ranges help you start a budget. Your property’s final price depends on the scope and site conditions.

Prepare a Wabasso project folder

Bring enough information to evaluate both the waterfront and the route to it.

  1. Keep the locality clear

Label mainland Wabasso on the inquiry and include the parcel number. Do not use Wabasso Beach as a substitute location.

  2. Sketch equipment access

Show gates, overhead restrictions, driveways, vegetation and the distance from unloading space to the wall. Flag areas needing further habitat review.

  3. Ask for a current fee calculation

Identify the application category, project value and any separate dock permit so the office can explain the applicable charges.

Wabasso project questions

Is the corridor plan the boundary of Wabasso?

It is a planning area, not a substitute for the Census place boundary, municipal jurisdiction or property survey. Use the appropriate map for the question.

Planning Division — Plans and Reports · TIGERweb Places, County Subdivisions, Consolidated Cities and Subminor Civil Divisions

Can a causeway boat ramp solve access to my wall?

A nearby public ramp does not establish commercial launch or staging permission. Ask the contractor to identify and confirm the actual access arrangement.

Is $200 the full permit cost?

No. The cited published schedule identifies an application fee. Obtain a current calculation for the complete scope and any other required review.
